February 14, 2007 -- Richard "Rick" Hane has been named the South Carolina Citizen Advocate of the Year by the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault in Columbia, SC. Mr. Hane was nominated by Foothills Alliance of Anderson for his work on behalf of child and adult survivors of sexual assault.

For more than 30 years, Rick Hane has been an advocate and leader in the field of mental health, child abuse prevention, and sexual assault intervention and prevention services. He served as a board member and volunteer for Foothills Alliance from 1999-2006, serving as board chair for four years. While chairman of the board, he oversaw the transformation of the Rape Crisis Center into a three-program, full-service agency - Foothills Alliance. He recently retired as director of the Anderson County Department of Social Services, where he served for eight years.

Mr. Hane is considered one of the leaders in the formation of Foothills Child Advocacy Center (CAC). According to Fay Brown, Executive Director of Foothills Alliance, "...without his persistence, dedication, and tenacity, the CAC would not be in existence." From his "front-row seat" as director of Anderson County DSS, Mr. Hane witnessed the devastation of young lives as sexually abused children were re-traumatized in an outdated system of investigation and prosecution. As a passionate innovator, he became familiar with the children's advocacy center approach, especially the work of the Low Country Children's Center in Charleston. He was determined that the children of Anderson and Oconee Counties would have access to such a facility some day. Today, the Foothills Child Advocacy Center is fully operational and accredited by the National Children's Alliance. The center has served more than 500 children since opening in 2003.

As chairman of the board of Foothills Alliance,  he provided direction and leadership for the Alliance to serve all populations of sexual assault survivors. Each year he personally directs a major fundraising event for the Alliance, Issaqueena's Last Ride, a cycling event in the mountains of Oconee County that brings participants from around the southeast to support Foothills Alliance.
