Local Information and Statistics

Statistics derived from Foothills Child Advocacy Center (FCAC) clients:
  • 45% of the children served at the Child Advocacy Center in 2005 are under 8 years old.

  • Parents represented the highest number of perpetrators in comparison with other victim/offender relationships.

  • In 70% of cases where the victim disclosed his/her relationship to the perpetrator, the perpetrator was a family member.

  • In the FCAC's existence, no perpetrator was a stranger.

  • In 2005, its second year of serving clients, the FCAC served 141 children who are victims of child sexual abuse, a 28% increase over the first year.

  • In 2005, Caucasians represented 79.31% of those children that were abused.

  • Based on 2005 data, Caucasian children are most at risk to be victimized without respect to perpetrator race.

  • The majority of females experienced multiple types of abuse.

Information derived from Foothills Sexual Trauma Center (FSTC) clients:
  • The number of calls to the Foothills Sexual Trauma Center 24-hour crisis hotline from Oconee County residents are 1/6 of the number of calls from Anderson County residents while the population of Oconee county is approximately 1/2 of Anderson County's population.

  • At least 85% of clients served at the Foothills Sexual Trauma Center in 2005 who disclosed his/her relationship to the offender, knew him or her.



National Statistics
  • An American is sexually assaulted every two minutes. (RAINN)

  • Every 6 minutes, one rape is reported in the United States. (Federal Bureau of Investigations, 1997)

  • Less than 39% of sexual assaults are reported to law enforcement. (RAINN)

  • At least 20% of American women and 5% to 10% of men have been sexually abused as children. (Finkelhor, 1994)

  • Family members constitute 30% to 50% of the perpetrators against girls, and 10% to 20% of the perpetrators against boys. (Brief Sexual Violence Statistics)

  • In 8 out of 10 rape cases, the victim knew the perpetrator. (NSVRC-Some Facts on Sexual Violence)

  • A 1996 National Institute of Justice study estimated that each year child sexual abuse in America costs the nation $23 billion. (Victim Cost and Consequences: A New Look, 1996)



Impact and Effects of Sexual Assault on Individuals
  • Seventy-five to 95% of 14-18 year-old girls in the justice system have been victims of sexual abuse. (Research on Women and Girls in the Justice System Series, 2000.)

  • Twenty-six percent of women suffering from bulimia nervosa were raped at some point in their lives, while 13.3% of women with no eating disorder had been raped. (The National Women’s Study: Relationship of Victimization and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder to Bulimia Nervosa, 1997.)

  • Girls who were raped are about three times more likely to suffer from psychiatric disorders and over four times more likely to suffer from drug and alcohol abuse in adulthood. (Childhood Sexual Abuse and Adult Psychiatric and Substance Use Disorders in Women, 2000.)

  • People who reported childhood rape were nearly three times more likely to become pregnant before the age of 18. (Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse and Subsequent Risk of HIV Infection, 1991.)

  • Adolescent girls with a history of sexual abuse were twice as likely to have had intercourse by age 15 while not using birth control at last intercourse. (Adolescent Pregnancy and Sexual Risk Taking Among Sexually Abused Girls, 1997.)

  • Female students who have been physically and/or sexually abused by a dating partner in the 9th through 12th grades are at increased risk for problems with substance abuse, unhealthy weight control behaviors, risky sexual behaviors, pregnancy and suicidality.
